Montreal Meta Report September 2020

Montreal Meta Report September 2020

The September 2020 ban list brought many changes to the TCG. We have seen cards like Jet Synchron pay the price for being too flexible as a small synchro engine. We also saw The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche make a return to the game as the Phantom Rage booster set comes to the TCG in November.

As the dust settles, a new meta has started to form. Here is a look at the local Montreal Metagame for September 2020 by top placement.

  • Infernoble Knights 9
  • Orcust 8
  • Dinosaur 5
  • Eldlich 3
  • Adamancipator 2
  • Altergeists 2
  • Dragon Link 2
  • Subterror 2
  • Thunder Dragon 2
  • Heroes 1
  • Sky Strikers 1
  • Salamangreat 1
  • Gouki 1
  • Zombies 1
  • Burning Abyss 1
  • Trap Trix 1
  • Burn 1
  • Invoked 1
  • Spellbook 1
  • Madolche 1
  • Witchcrafter 1
  • Mekk-Knights 1
  • Mermail 1

The Combo Decks

To no one's surprise Infernoble Knights takes the lead as the premier combo deck coming in at 18% of top placements this past September. On the other hand Dragon Link has not seen that much success in the Montreal area with only 4% of the representation. In online play Dragon Link has had a more commanding hold on the early meta. Unlike the metagame has a whole, Montreal see a sizable amount of Orcust in top cuts taking up 16%. The deck got back a copy of The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche which is more than enough for players to start experimenting with the deck again. Thunder Dragons is another combo deck that players have begun experimenting with as it puts up a very powerful field even through multiple disruptions. However, the deck only took 4% of the meta.

Going Second Decks

Coming in strong with 10% representation, Dinosaurs are far from extinct. With a boss monster as powerful as Ultimate Conductor Tyranno the strategy came be made as a go second deck and clear most any threats made by the opponent.

Control Decks

Control decks took a beating this format as the combo decks prove to be too much to handle. Leading the pack is Eldlich with only 6% representation. Altergeist and Subterror each take up 4%. The Dogmatika archetype finds itself mostly in  Eldlich decks as a sub-archetype. The engine has not made as big a splash on the TCG as it has in the OCG.

As no new products are coming to the TCG in the month of October the meta will continue as is with combo decks being the strategy to beat.
